Some time ago a friend of mine was registering for classes and she elected to take yoga to fill some requirement. She was super nervous because she didn't want to look like a fool. After listening compassionately to her worries I got real with her. "Honey, you're going to look like an idiot!" I think she was stunned. But we laughed.
Family gatherings are about as real as you can get. So just go with it. Maybe it will be messy. But think of the times when life was horrific and now you laugh about it. "remember the time...." Or maybe it will be the best holiday gathering ever.
To Your Most Peaceful Holiday Self
Tying thing up certainly is the mantra of the season. Packages, ribbons and bows all over and wrapping paper in every design.
And wrapping things up is exactly what you should be doing this time of year. In the midst of all the excitement, there are some details that you may need to wrap up before the end of the year.
Donations - Are there charities or organizations you wish to donate to?
Investments - Do you need to review year end adjustments
Savings - are there savings accounts that you want to add to (kids college)
Information backup - When was the last time you did a computer backup? You can easily do a back up on an external hard drive or enlist the help of an online storage system.
End of year files - Do you have a location where you can put your end of year files? If nothing else, make one folder to put your documents.
Creating next year's files. As your end of year statements are coming in, take a look at what kind of information you need to keep track of. You may need to slightly adjust your files for easier filing. You may want to consider an online system.
Recently I've been on this kick about clearing out drawers and all those little hiding places that stuff gets sucked into. You know, like when someone stops in and you are frantically trying to clear? There have been a few places that, well, it was finally their time to have a good clearing,
It sounds silly but there actually is a good way to make the process easy. It's piece by piece.
Start by getting an empty garbage can.
