Cozy Up

11/5/2014

I love this time of the year. We bring out all our candle decorations and in the evening it looks all warm and cozy in the house.  But after winding down after a long day and enjoying the warmth of the candlelight, it's easy to be sleepy and forget to extinguish your candles.  I've done it!  Fortunately it was a large candle in a container.  But it was still dangerous.

Preventing candle accidents is easy to do.  Here are some great tips to enjoy your candles and keep yourself and your family safe.

  • Set a reminder that you have candles burning - sticky note or alarm
  • Use only tip-proof containers.
  • Burn candles only while you're awake and in the same room with them.
  • Keep candles at least 3 ft. away from combustibles.
  • Never burn candles that have combustibles (flowers, leaves and potpourri) cast into the wax.
  • Be aware of the airflow near your candles
  • Be conscious of children and pets
  • Use caution when extinguishing candles to ensure sparks don't land on fabric or decorations
  • Cut wicks to appropriate height before lighting the candle
  • Throw out candles that are too small to burn safely

Tip: Go through your candle and candleholder collection and throw away tippy holders and candles with combustibles cast into them
