Sometimes I get really anxious when I go to see my doctor. It's silly really. I know these people. It's not like they are going to bite me. But I still get nervous. Like I did something wrong because my lab numbers aren't what they should be. It's what I imagine being sent to the principal's office would be like.
It's taken some time and for the most part I have lost the anxiety. And you should too. When you are in a state of anxiety or fear it is difficult to create an open dialogue with your doctor. Sure they have those important initials after their name, but you have a voice in your health care. You are actually in the power position because it really comes down to what you want to achieve.
As healthcare is moving to online appointments and having the patient be a more active participant in their healthcare,make sure you are comfortable in speaking honestly and openly with your providers.
Before leaving make sure you understand everything. They will wait. Just gently ask them to give you a minute to review and acknowledge that they are busy.
