The Universe called yesterday

Yesterday I received an email from another organizer about how maintaining your computer and electronic devices is important.  When you spend a little time maintaining, you can prevent issues like loosing information by not backing up your files.

I needed to hear that because I also have been meaning to do a complete backup in addition to my cloud backup.  A small investment of time gave me peace of mind knowing that I have both an external hard drive and cloud storage of my information. 

Your information is a re-source.  You gather and store it so that you can use it when you need it. And, just like your car, you need to maintain it. 

Your inner voice (or maybe the universe) is calling you to take action.  Ok, maybe it's not the most exciting task.  But you will be glad you listened!

Your attention please

I had intended to write this post on Wednesday.  But then I got pulled away with other responsibilities.

What gets you hooked into something?  What is it that redirects your attention and takes you away from your original intentions?  For myself, it's bright shiny objects like arts and crafts.  But sometimes its because I have to give my time, energy and attention to something that has landed on my plate.  Ever have that happen?

It's times like these when you should pay special attention to your time and energy.  Even if you had intended to complete a task, do you have the resources to do it?  It's not only the physical energy, but the mental and emotional energy as well. 

When your attention (time and energy) gets pulled away from your intentions, take time to review when you intend to do your original task.  Your time and energy are tools to get it done. Use them wisely.

Not every picture is worth 1000

Why do you hold onto pictures that you know you will never use again?  They will never get into an album, never get sent and probably tucked into a box somewhere. It's like when we keep pens that don't work.  We test them out - and then put them back in the pile! 

Your One Thing Wednesday challenge is this.  Only keep the pictures that are worth 1000 pieces of joy!  Delete or toss any photos that you know you will never use, ones that are questionable (like this one)  and any duplicates.

Once you toss any hard copies, go to your phone or other mobile devices and laptop and delete those too!

Yesterday I asked you to write down one thing that you want in 2016.  Did you do it?  You've heard it before that just writing down your goals is the first step in accomplishing them.  It sets the destination of the goal.

Oftentimes people write down a rather lengthy to do list without much thought on the time, energy and supplies it's going to take to accomplish it.  It's why people get overwhelmed and their minds get cluttered with the details. 

Clearing is the first step in organizing.  You need that space in which to work.  When I start a project, I have to write everything down. I start with writing down the task and then list all the items I need or people I need to talk to. (Dad?)  It's the right tools for the right job.

Today, clear out one thing.  If you can't clear an entire space, do at least one thing towards that project.
  • Put a paper bag in your closet for clothes you will donate (be ruthless with editing  clothes)
  • Open  up all you mail and toss envelopes and junk mail
  • Shred personal information
  • Get the number of the dog groomer
  • Make a copy of your new insurance cards and put them in your wallet
  • Send that thank you to your host/hostess

Whatever it is, start with something.  Doing something is better than nothing at all.

Let it Flow

You've been working hard on getting everything just right for how you are going to spend the holidays.  Careful planning, lots of preparation, making sure that everyone on your list has just the right gift or making those reservations far enough in advance to actually get one.

Now is the time to just let if flow. 
  • Trust that you have done your very best. 
  • Enjoy the company of family and friends
  • Savor the beauty of the cookies and baking that you put so much love into
  • As you wrap your last gifts, think about the person you are giving it to
  • Sit in front of holiday lights (with a cup of hot chocolate if you can) and enjoy the twinkling of the colors.
  • Stand on your back step or porch and breath the cold air.  Yes I know it's cold outside, but do it anyway!

It really is the most wonderful time of the year.  So flow with it!

I'm a squiggle

One of the hardest jobs is to keep the little every day clutter at bay. Every day there seems to be something out of place or that needs to go back to it's rightful place. So how do you keep in under control?

It doesn't really matter what your technique is as long as you are comfortable on how you do it.  It the process causes you anxiety, then another technique may be in order.

Personally, I am a squiggle.  I don't pick up something, put it away and then go to the next item. I am more like the image posted here.  I take a basket and pick up misplaced items in one room and continue throughout the house, dropping off where necessary.  I don't stop until the basket is empty. 

Handy tip:  Work systematically from top to bottom of the house or from left to right.

Second look

Did you do - or not - with what's behind your front door yesterday?  How did it feel to look at your entryway with a whole new perspective?  Did you realize there was work to be done, or were you happy with your space?

Sometimes all we need is a second look at a space.  Because we live in our space every day, we tend to not really see everything that's there.  It's easy to glaze over the stuff in our space.  Or we simply want to ignore dealing with it because it's too emotionally draining. 

Taking one thing or one step towards a clearer space creates both a physical and emotional gap.  It's a place for the eye and the mind to rest.  To pause.  To breath.

Your One Thing Wednesday is this:  Take out one thing from your entryway or first area of extra items. A picture, a figurine, a bag of clothes, a pair of shoes or mine - a hat or two.  If you can't decide on what to eliminate, donate or throw, ask yourself this; "does this belong here?"  Then ask "Is it useful every day?", and finally "do I love it?"

Ultimate dream?

Did you take the time to visualize your goal?  Fun to imagine, but even better to begin the journey to that goal.


My ultimate dream is to have a sauna in our basement.  Mmmmmm, delicious. Unfortunately, there is a LOT of work to be done in clearing out our basement. It's a process.  But that's the beauty of it.  You don't have to do it all at once. 

Breaking down your project into smaller chunks makes it much more manageable.  You get to celebrate those small successes and each time you work towards that vision it brings you one step closer to you dream.

Your One Thing Wednesday is this.  Now that you have scheduled one time to work towards your goal or vision, make it a repeating event on your calendar.


Slow and steady wins the race.

It's easier to enjoy the outdoors when it's summer. If you live in colder climates, you know how sacred the perfect summer days are.  So why aren't you getting out there?

Now you have a valid reason to get out for lunch!  Not only are you fueling and energizing your body, it's healthy for your cognitive and spiritual energy too.  Especially those days when you feel you've already spent a day in the trenches.

Your one thing Wednesday tip: Get out for lunch!  Taking time to care for yourself is not wasted energy. It's an investment in you.

When you can't make a decision about whether to keep an item, it's time to start asking questions.

Keep drilling down until you get to the real reason you are keeping something.  And remember to be honest with your answers.

  1. What is my immediate emotional response to this?
  2. What kind of energy does it bring me? (positive, negative, nostalgic, anxiety)
  3. Why do I need this?
  4. What would happen if I didn't have this?
  5. Could I get this somewhere else?
  6. Is it current?
  7. When was the last time I used it?
  8. Is it something I want to pass on as an heirloom?
  9. Does that person even want it?
  10. Where am I displaying this in my home?


By getting to the emotional reasons you are saving something, you are able to release the emotions attached to the object - and then the object itself.

You one thing Wednesday tip is to be honest about the emotional reasons as to why you are keeping an item.
