And they're off!

So your kids are settled into their dorms or apartments at school and they are loving the independence.  But then they go to the doctor and one of you gets a bill in the mail.  You call to find out the details and the representative says, "Sorry, I can't talk to you."  WHAT?  You are paying those funny things called tuition and medical.

The rule is called HIPPA which protects the privacy and security of an individual.  The following article from SafelyFiled offers an easy way for both of you to stay connected and updated with your child's health information by keeping it at your fingertips.

A Piece of Pie

There has been a lot of buzz here in Minneapolis about Prince's estate on how the assets will be distributed to family members. Questions abound on who gets what slice..

It's always interesting to hear the stories of how the remains of someone's estate are divided. Sometimes its simple because the person has taken the time to get their affairs in order and in writing.  But even meticulous measures do not preclude arguments on who gets what.

Taking small steps now will ease the burden of "proof" of how assets will be managed.
  • Open the discussion about where you want your assets to be distributed.
  • Get your wishes written down.
  • Put them in a central location
  • Tell your executor where your will and supporting information is held.
  • Document the date on which the information was updated

Even if it is ONE THING you do to document your wishes, it will diminish the discussion of who gets the "best" slice.

Still Not Enough

Conclusions are based on the information available at the moment.

I went to my doctor's appointment with all my information and guess what?  There was STILL missing information.  Even after my other physician's assistant verified that lab and clinic information would be sent to my rheumatologist, it wasn't there.

So how much information do you need?  That depends.  For my appointment the missing labs were not such a big deal.  It was a touch base appointment.  But what if there was something more urgent where those results were vital.  (sorry no pun intended)

These are some things to think about:
  • You are your best health care advocate.
  • You may be your only ambassador for your health and information
  • It is up to you to ensure that your information is compiled and accessible when you need it.
  • How much time and energy to you want to expend on managing your information?
  • Where and how will you access it?

In order to make the best conclusion and optimize your care, you and your physician must have all the pieces of the puzzle.  You have control over that.  The question is will you do it?

I'm going to see my rheumatologist today.  It's been awhile since we've met and although I have an extended appointment with him, I still want to make sure he has all the information possible in front of him so I am bringing the following.
  • Current list of medications
  • Copy of medical records from care team (eye doctor, nephrologist, pcp)
  • Last lab results
  • List of questions and writing materials to take notes.

Sounds like a lot.  But in order to get the best medical plan moving forward, you need to provide all the pieces of information. That means keeping on top of your medical files.

How and where you keep your information is always completely up to you.  The most important thing is that it is organized so that you can access it when you need it.  All the pieces of your medical history combined with your care team's input will give you the best possible physician's visit.

Where do you go when you want truthful and factual information?  The source of course!

In taking care of your health, your source has historically been your primary care physician. And while they are still an important part of your health care team, you probably have more than y our one provider.  Especially if you have any kind of complicated health condition or are caring for another. Even eye appointment results are important for your care team to review.

With many physicians and specialists providing input, who is leading the team?  YOU are!.  You are your best - and possibly only-ambassador for your health.

So what does this mean?  It means that YOU are the one to coordinate the communication between providers.  It means that you are the one who has access to all of your health information at any given time.  It means that you are the one to keep that information safe and secure.

Sounds scary, but communication combined with accurate and updated information allows your care team to provide you with the best care possible.  It is with the full scope of data that they are able to make suggestions and recommendations.  Each piece is  important.

To your peace and health by providing all the right pieces.
