A Piece of Pie

There has been a lot of buzz here in Minneapolis about Prince's estate on how the assets will be distributed to family members. Questions abound on who gets what slice..

It's always interesting to hear the stories of how the remains of someone's estate are divided. Sometimes its simple because the person has taken the time to get their affairs in order and in writing.  But even meticulous measures do not preclude arguments on who gets what.

Taking small steps now will ease the burden of "proof" of how assets will be managed.
  • Open the discussion about where you want your assets to be distributed.
  • Get your wishes written down.
  • Put them in a central location
  • Tell your executor where your will and supporting information is held.
  • Document the date on which the information was updated

Even if it is ONE THING you do to document your wishes, it will diminish the discussion of who gets the "best" slice.
